Petit Verdot Accolades
Week of 1/3/21
2018 Battuello Vineyards Petit Verdot
Inky garnet in the glass, this wine smells of black cherry and cassis. In the mouth, rich black cherry, blackberry and cassis flavors are bright with juicy acidity even as they sit with some weight on the palate. Toasty notes of oak float on top of the dark fruit, and powdery tannins fill every nook and cranny of the mouth. A touch of cola lingers in the finish. Brawny, but not overpowering in its richness. 14.5% alcohol. Score: between 8.5 and 9.

Dark purple color. The nose is deep and saucy with blackberries and roasted fig, lots of graphite, smoky charcoal, black pepper, with violets and clove. Full-bodied on the palate with solid, grippy tannins but the acidity is vibrant and keeps the wine balanced. Dark plums, blackberries and roasted figs (rich but vibrant fruit) mixed with complex elements of rocky earth, anise, black pepper, with nuanced mocha and caramel tones. Complex, delicious, this is one to age or crack around a campfire with grilled steaks. (91 points IJB)

Battuello 2018 Petit Verdot St. Helena, Napa Valley
The Petit Verdot is a very good wine from its dark berry, dried herbs, and cedary nose to its rich, long finish. It’s soft on entry, silky in texture, and mouth filling with good density and purity. We especially like the persistent finish. 14.5% alc. (91+)

I’m seeing more and more of this variety getting top billing on labels these days. Petit Verdot usually plays a bit part in blends, serving to deepen color and fill what winemakers call “hole in the middle” issues thanks to its round personality. This bottling lets other facets come to the fore, with chocolate and layered fall spice and soft pepper joining rich black fruit. There’s a little saline note that adds a savory character to the bold fruit, and it makes for an elevated dialogue of flavor. It’s a fine partner for beef dishes, and it’s got the structure to age a good while. Great stuff. 94.

A deep purple hue catches the eye, and the concentrated berry and violet aroma captures the senses. Voluptuous on the palate, as flavors of purple plums, black currant, tobacco, wild blackberries, and oak spice nuances unfold harmoniously. The texture is velvety, the tannins are supple, and lush fruit lingers well beyond the last sip. Approachable now, while promising to age gracefully for years.

2018 Battuello Vineyards Petit Verdot
With a thick entry of red cherry and plum, this darkly colored wine is robustly tannic with grip and pronounced oak—a mark of the variety. Dried herb, cigar and notes of leather round out the long finish. 90.
